Astorino Ranked 24th in Modern Healthcare's Top Architecture Firm Survey
Completion of Two Major Healthcare Facilities Led Design Efforts in 2009
PITTSBURGH – Astorino was recently ranked 24th by Modern Healthcare in the Top Architecture Firms for the 2010 Construction and Design Survey. The survey is conducted annually to recognize top performing firms and measure design trends within the healthcare construction industry.

Highlighting Astorino’s successful year was the completion of two major projects; Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Residential Living Villas.
Astorino designed the new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC to provide users with increased control over variables that can cause stress, foster the ability to connect with the outside world and engage an atmosphere of positive energy. The facility is designed as a model for family-centered care and features embracing designs of color, individual patient rooms with sleeping capabilities for parents, a healing garden, and a family resource center. This new hospital is one of the first fully-digital hospitals in the world.

The theme of healing through architectural design also played a major role in the creation of the Residential Living Villas for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This 98-bed project was designed to create a residential community for homeless and vocational rehabilitation, allowing veterans to take responsibility for their own care and learn valuable life skills. The neighborhood design includes private and semi-private rooms, group dining venues, and recreational facilities that emphasize patient interaction within a real-world setting. These features helped set a new standard in the architectural design and clinical operation of a traditional domiciliary.

In addition to their completed projects, Astorino had numerous designs in the studio and under construction including Cancer Treatment Services International in India, Bert Fish Medical Center in Florida, Upson Regional Medical Center in Georgia, and Magee-Womens Research Institute in Pittsburgh.

Astorino offers a diverse and award-winning portfolio consisting of more than 1,000 design projects, nationally and internationally. The firm brings together the best in quality project management, medical planning, architectural design, engineering, technology, aesthetics and sustainable design in a way that is custom suited to assure an outcome that exceeds expectations.

Over 190 respondents participated in the 31st annual survey and rankings were tabulated by 2009 dollar volume, square footage, and number of projects within the healthcare industry.
