PHILADELPHIA,– Astorino, a Pittsburgh-based architecture, engineering, interior design and construction services firm, was honored Tuesday evening at the Design-Build Competition Awards Program for its excellence in designing and building the Meadville Medical Center’s new Oncology Wellness Institute. The Institute is the first freestanding cancer care facility in the Crawford County area, and the area’s only source for radiation therapy treatment.
The chapter honored the firm in the category of “Private Sector Building - Under $15 Million” for its work in transforming the center into a state-of-the-art facility that provides outpatient treatments, radiation oncology and improved access to local physicians.
“We are honored to win such a prestigious award from the DBIA, and it is a particular point of pride that this project provides an entire community with such an important facility,” said Louis P. Astorino, CEO of Astorino Development. “It was truly our pleasure to bring the Meadville Medical Center’s ideas to life for the Oncology Wellness Institute, and we are proud to share this award with the wonderful hospital personnel we worked with during the design and construction process.”
In creating the Oncology Wellness Institute, Astorino aimed to stay true to the facility’s goal of providing a holistic approach to treatment that reduced stress on both patients and family members. The designers integrated numerous aspects of care, which included:
- Access to nature through the expansive use of glass, incorporation of an outdoor healing garden and close proximity to walking trails – all providing the opportunity for reflection
- Building a learning center where patients and families can educate themselves about their disease
- Designing a chemotherapy treatment area that provides family members with comfortable seating to support patients during their treatment
- Incorporating art and music into the overall design and providing an area for a local artist to assist patients in creating their own works during and after treatment
The facility was also designed with sustainable concepts in mind – ranging from consideration of the site’s woodland setting, water and energy efficiency measures, materials conservation and the best possible indoor environmental quality. A comprehensive erosion and sedimentation control plan was also implemented as a way to reduce land disturbance, including efforts to keep the forest and creek adjacent to the Institute intact.
“We have been fortunate that Astorino has shown tremendous knowledge in design, construction, and management to truly create an environment that promotes healing,” stated Anthony J. DeFail, President and CEO of the Meadville Medical Center. “By acting not only as designer but also as construction manager, Astorino offered and provided essential and open communication that enabled us to easily achieve our goals for schedule and budget which was vital to our project’s success.”
Astorino completed the work for the Oncology Wellness Institute over the course of 12 months at a final cost of $6.15 million.
